How does Dianette work?
It is a combination of oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and an anti-androgen (cryptoterone acetate). The androgens are responsible for stimulating the oil glands in the skin and hair growth. Due to an increase in androgen levels, or alternatively, a high sensitivity to androgen, the oil glands may produce too much sebum, whereby blocking the oil glands, which become infected and inflamed causing acne spots. Cryptoterone acetate blocks the receptors in the skin that the androgens normally work on. This prevents the androgens from affecting the skin or the hair and hence, the acne and hirsutism reduce.
This combination of ethinylestradiol and cryptoterone acetate prevents pregnancy by working in three ways, primarily by preventing ovulation, and also by thickening the cervical mucus, which makes it difficult for the sperm to enter the womb and by altering the endometrium, which daunts implantation.
