Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is becoming more and more in demand all over the world. The reasons for this could be many from failed contraception to irresponsible actions. Either way, drugs to prevent that unwanted pregnancy are now available over the counter at most leading pharmacies, health care clinics and online medical stores. While one does not really need a doctor’s prescription to take an emergency contraceptive pill, it is always advisable to contact a doctor so that the necessary steps can be taken to prevent side effects etc. Most common emergency contraceptives need to be taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex.
Levonelle

Levonelle is manufactured by Bayer Schering Pharma. The active ingredient of this drug is Levonorgestrel 1500mcg. In order for this drug to be effective, it needs to be taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. Levonelle prevent a pregnancy by preventing ovulation and fertilization. It also modifies the uterus wall so that the egg cannot implant itself if fertilized. In addition to this Levonelle also thickens the mucus lining of the cervix making it difficult for the sperm to pass through. It takes between 24 to 72 hours for conception to occur and therefore the drug is most effective if taken during this time. Side effects of this drug are mostly minor and include stomach pain, breast tenderness and vomiting.
ellaOne

ellaOne is the latest entry to the emergency contraception market. It is manufactured by HRA Pharma and is already readily available in Europe. The main reason that this drug is now becoming popular is because of the fact that it can be taken up to 120 hours after having unprotected sex. The active ingredient in ellaOne is ulipristal acetate which is a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone. This tricks the body into believing that ovulation has already occurred. It also thickens the lining of the cervix so that the sperm cannot penetrate. Like its counterparts ellaOne modifies the lining of the uterus making it impossible for a fertilized egg to survive in it. The common side effects of this drug include stomach pain, tenderness in the breast, mood changes, nausea and fatigue.
