Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
Circulatory deficiency can be one cause of erectile dysfunction. Heart disease, diabetes and hormonal insufficiency can also result in ED. Certain drugs have also been proved to cause impotence. Recreational drugs such as nicotine, alcohol, cocaine and heroin are shown to cause ED. Medications used to treat ulcers and GERD can cause ED. Diuretics, beta-blockers and antidepressants also generate impotence. Finasteride, used for hair loss and prostate cancer can also lead to ED. Neurogenic disorders such as stroke or spinal cord injuries can lead to male impotence. A lowering of hormone levels as well as arterial and venous disorder is additional contributing factors. Psychological causes of male impotence include stress, depression, paranoia, and anxiety. Surgery can temporarily cause ED. Aging and poor lifestyle choices are also standard contributors. Estimates show that erectile dysfunction can affect 1 in 10 men.
Viagra
One of the medical prescriptions for erectile dysfunction is Viagra. This was the first drug that actually worked to reverse male impotence. It has been helping men effectively treat this disorder for the past 10 years. Once Viagra is taken it takes about 30 to 60 minutes to work. Sexual arousal must occur to get an erection. For Viagra to work optimally, take it on an empty stomach or eat a low fat meal.
Cialis
Cialis, or tadalafil, was approved in 2002 for use as a means of treating erectile dysfunction. It is effective for up to 36 hours or it can be taken once a day. Cialis has a longer half-life of 17.50 hours as compared to Viagra and Levitra’s shorter 4-5 hours. It has recently been approved for use as relief from pulmonary arterial hypertension. The option of taking Cialis once a day gives men the freedom of sexual spontaneity. Sex does not have to be planned on the daily dosage.
Levitra
Levitra or vardenafil is also used to treat male impotence. It was developed and marketed in 2005. Like Viagra and Cialis it is a PDE5 inhibitor. It has a longer effective duration than Viagra but not quite as long as Cialis. Like the other PDE5 inhibitors side effects are similar including nausea, back and stomach pain and changes in vision and hearing. Levitra is contraindicated in men taking nitrates as it might lead to dangerously low blood pressure.
