How Famvir Works

Famvir gets metabolized into an active anti-viral agent called penciclovir by the liver. This compound shows an inhibitory activity against the HSV-1, HSV-2 and VZV (varicella zoster virus). Once the drug is administered, the cells infected with the virus phosporylate penciclovir into mono-phosphate form. This in-turn gets converted into penciclovir tri-phosphate. It is believed that this penciclovir tri-phosphate acts by inhibiting the DNA polymerase of the virus. Consequently, the drug interferes with the DNA synthesis of the virus. Thus Famciclovir selectively inhibits the replication of the DNA in the virus. It reduces the viral growth in the body. Additionally the drug reduces the spread of the virus in the body.

Advantages of Famvir

Famvir has a major advantage when compared to other medications that are intended to treat genital herpes. A patient can start the treatment with the drug as soon as the signs of any outbreak appear. It can be taken at higher doses for treating the symptoms associated with the genital herpes or it can be taken at low doses. Low dosage of drug can be administered for longer duration and can be used for the prevention of any outbreaks associated with genital herpes. Also, once you buy Famvir it can be administered for a period of up to one year.

Famvir Contraindications

Famvir is generally contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive or allergic to it or to any of its contents. Patients with renal diseases must administer the drug with caution and with doctor's advice only. High doses of the drug in patients with renal disease may lead to renal failure or renal impairment. Pregnant women must avoid the administration of the drug. However, if it needed then the drug should be administered with the doctor's advice only.
