How Microgynon works?

Microgynon has a three-pronged mechanism to prevent conception. This levonorgestrel-ethynlestradiol combination works by tricking the female body into thinking that ovulation has already happened. This prevents the maturation and release of eggs from the ovaries. Also, it increases the viscosity of cervical mucus deterring the journey of the sperm to the ovum and changes the endometrium making implantation difficult. The net result of these three is inhibition of pregnancy.

How Should I Take Microgynon

A complete physical examination and medical checkup should be undertaken before initiation/re-initiation of the pills. All the 21 pills of microgynon have the same hormones. You have to take one tablet daily for 21 days, starting on the first day of the menstrual cycle. The next pack of microgynon is to be started after a seven-day interval. Any pill you miss should be taken within 12 hours to restore normalcy. In case of greater delays or more pills missed, additional contraceptive methods might have to be used.

Do not take Microgynon if you have:

  • Confirmed or suspected pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Disturbances of liver functions or incidences of liver tumours
  • A personal or family history of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • History of breast cancer
  • Vaginal bleeding of an unidentified cause
  • Disorders of lipid metabolism
  • Hypersensitivity to the constituents of the drug

Also, microgynon might react adversely to certain drug combinations, so let your medical practitioner know of your current drugs or of a change in your drug regimen.

The drug cannot be used to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

What are the side effects of Microgynon?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Gastric upsets
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Fluctuations in body weight
  • Worsened tolerance to contact lenses
  • Bouts of depressive moods
  • Reduction of menstrual flow (which is actually beneficial for certain patents)
  • Intermenstrual bleeding (typically in the first few months)
  • Slightly increased risk of breast cancer
  • Increased risk of clots in the blood vessels
  • Slightly increased risk of heart attack or stroke

However, these side effects are quite uncommon, and just because they are mentioned here, not everyone taking this medicine will experience that side effect.

Over dosage

Over dosage may cause nausea, vomiting and withdrawal bleeding. There are no detailed remedies and treatment is, by and large, symptomatic.

How do I buy Microgynon?

Microgynon is a prescription only drug and hence to buy it, whether at a pharmacy or online, a prescription from a registered practitioner will be required.
