How Does Micronor Work?
Micronor helps prevent pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus of the uterus. This makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg to fertilize it. These pills can also make the uterine wall or endometrial lining thicker and inhospitable for implantation. Norethisterone is also known to prevent the ovaries from releasing a matured egg for fertilization. By preventing an egg from releasing and by making changes to the endometrial lining, the natural menstrual undergoes some changes. These changes, overriding in nature due to the hormonal effect, result in several fold pregnancy prevention.
How Is Micronor Taken?
Micronor should be taken every day, including on days of period. This is unlike combined pills where there is usually a break of 7 days. The packs hence have to be taken back to back. Ideally, you should start on the first day of your period. If starting on the first day, the drug will be immediately able to prevent pregnancy. However, you can also start as late as fifth day if you have regular menses. If you do not have regular periods, then you must use addition contraception for the first two days of taking this pill. The pill should be taken at the same hour every day for maximum benefit. If for any reason more three hours have elapsed, since you missed the hour of your daily dose, you should addition contraception for the next two days, as the mini pill will not be able to prevent pregnancy. However, if less than three hours are elapsed, you can take your pill right away and you will be able to prevent pregnancy without additional contraception.
Changes to the menstrual cycle and bleeding
Progesterone only pills or mini pills like Micronor can cause irregular periods and changes to the bleeding patterns. Often, these settle down once the body gets used to the pill. If for any reason it takes longer than what your doctor suggested, you need to stop taking the pills and get your condition checked, as several conditions can cause irregular menstrual flow.
