Average Delivery Time: 3 Working Days
How Does Ovranette Work
The ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel combination works by making changes to the body's menstrual cycle. The hormonal levels of estrogen and progesterone undergo changes through a woman's menstrual cycle. These changes bring about the creation of an egg, which matures and becomes ready for fertilization with sperm. On fertilization with sperm, the fertilized egg is implanted on the uterine wall, where it develops. If the egg is not fertilized by sperm, the body ejects it through bleeding. This is the end of a cycle and start of a new cycle. By preventing the egg from maturation, due to the overriding effect of the synthetic hormones in the pill, the egg does not progress to maturity phase and the uterine wall is not allowed to nourish itself for pregnancy. That apart, the hormones increase the density of the cervical mucus and do not allow sperm to reach the egg.
How To Take The Ovranette Pill
This contraceptive should be taken for 21 days in a month. This is followed by 7 pill free days. This constitutes a cycle. Ideally a woman should start taking ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel combination on the first day of her period in order to avail its benefit right away. It can also be taken from last day of period, and there would be no need for extra contraception because during the bleeding phase, there is no scope for pregnancy. On the other hand if the pill is taken at any other time of the cycle, it would not be effective right away. For the next 7 days, other forms of contraception would be required to prevent pregnancy.
What happens to the menstrual cycle after taking these pills?
The ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel combination overrides the menstrual cycle. Under the effect of the pills, the body has 21 days of bleeding free days and 7 days of withdrawal bleeding, during which the levels of hormones in the body decrease. This is akin to menstrual bleeding phase.
What if I miss a pill?
If you forget to take your daily pill of Ovranette, you should take it as soon as you remember you missed a dose, even if it means taking two tablets in a day. The pill does not get absorbed if you vomit in two hours or less of taking the pill or if you have had diarrhea for more than 24 hours, the pill would get expelled and needs to be considered a missed dose. If you have been taking the pill properly till the day you missed your dose, you would still be able to prevent pregnancy even if you have had sexual intercourse before taking the missed dose. However, this is the case if you have missed less than three pills. Hence, if you have missed three or more pills, you need to wait seven days before you can solely rely on the pill to prevent pregnancy.
