Slimming Pills

Trying to find a solution to obesity is a billion dollar business. Diets, exercise routines and medications have all been touted as the cure to being fat. Slimming pills promise a quick way to loose weight. Both over the counter and prescription medications such as Xenical are available to fight obesity.

Over the Counter Slimming Pills

Over the counter pills can be dangerous. Many have very little information regarding how they work, dangerous side effects or contraindications. These medications are not licensed or controlled by any agency. As a matter of fact there are some pills that can do more harm than help you lose weight. Some pills can exacerbate conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Other slimming pills can adversely interact with medications such as thyroid pills. In addition many of these are very expensive. It is best to avoid these pills if they promise overnight weight loss or a loss of more than 2 lbs. a week. Do not believe a slimming pill that states you do not need to eat healthy or exercise. The only pills that have actually proven to promote weight loss are Xenical and Reductil.

Xenical

Xenical acts as a lipase inhibitor. It works by blocking enzymes that digest fat. This prevents fat being absorbed into the body. Instead it is eliminated through the digestive system. As a result the individual loses weight. This drug is usually prescribed for those whose Body Mass Index is over 30 and dieting and exercise have not worked. Studies have shown average weight loss of 10% of total body weight yearly. Many who take Xenical are also provided a reduced calorie menu plan. Side effects include flatulence, loose stools and inability to absorb fat soluble drugs and vitamins.

Reductil

Reductil acts by suppressing appetite. Its main ingredient is sibutramine hydrochloride.  This drug blocks serotonin absorption resulting in an increase in serotonin levels. This gives you the feeling of fullness. Reductil will be prescribed if Body Mass Index is at 30.  A reduced calorie nutrition plan and regular exercise are also recommended to increase weight loss. Studies have found 77% of individuals who take Reductil do experience some type of weight loss. Side effects include constipation, dry mouth and increase in blood pressure.

Losing Weight & Alternatives to Slimming Pills

Aside from taking these slimming pills there are a few tricks that will help anyone lose weight. The old adage of “get moving” is definitely true. Even sitting at your desk for eight hours a day can help you loose weight if you know how to do it. Try tapping your feet, drumming your fingers, changing position and wriggling and fidgeting. Stand up while you are on the phone or squeeze a stress ball while talking to colleagues. Take the stairs, or select a bathroom as far away from your office as possible. Take half of your lunch time and walk around the building. Park your car at the far end of the parking lot.  Another trick is to build muscles. They burn more calories than fat even when you are not moving.  Try to lift weights for 20 minutes 3X a week. Hire a professional trainer to show you how to properly lift weights so you do not hurt yourself.  Try eating spicy foods or drinks with caffeine as these can increase metabolism. Get plenty of aerobic exercise. At minimum you should exercise briskly at least 30 minutes a day. Finally, have small frequent meals rather than 1 or 2 large meals. This will keep the digestive system working and burning calories.

Before starting any weight reducing plan see you doctor for a general physical. You want to make sure you are able to exercise without danger. This is also a good time to discuss getting a prescription for one of the slimming pills.
