Viagra - the Blue Pill

Viagra, known chemically as Sildenafil citrate, and more commonly referred to as the blue pill , is used to counteract erectile dysfunction as well as pulmonary arterial hypertension.  It works by preventing the action of cGMP specific phosphodiesterase type 5. This enzyme controls the flow of blood to the penis.  Today most of the focus has centered on Sildenafil citrate as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra is known as the " blue pill " for one obvious reason - the color coding of the Viagra pill all over the world is blue!.

History of the Blue Pill

Sildenafil was originally developed by English chemists for use in individuals with high blood pressure and ischaemic heart disease. While undergoing clinical trials it was discovered this drug worked poorly on angina but could cause penile erections. It was patented and approved for sale in the late 1990s. In the period from 1999-2001 combined sales of blue pills were over $1 billion.

Uses

Sildenafil’s primary use is to treat erectile dysfunction under the marketing name of Viagra. It is commonly referred to as the blue pill. It works especially well for men with diabetes and men on antidepressants.  Sildenafil can also reduce pulmonary arterial hypertension. It works by relaxing the wall of the artery, which results in a decrease of pressure. As a result the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood. The drug is called Revatio when it is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. Sildenafil citrate also reduces altitude sickness. It is now popular with mountain climbers and others forced to experience high altitudes.  Studies are also looking into its effectiveness in reversing jet lag as well as its uses in women with poor sex drive. Some athletes believe that the blue pill enhances their abilities by opening blood vessels and allowing more oxygen enriched blood to circulate through the body.

Contraindications

Viagra blue pills should not be taken with certain medications and during particular illnesses or diseases. Do not take Viagra blue pills if nitrates, organic nitrites or nitric oxide donors have been prescribed. Viagra should not be used if taking the recreational drugs referred to as nitrite poppers. Men should not take Viagra if their doctor has advised them not to have sex due to heart disorders. Decreased liver function and renal disease are also contraindicated.  Do not take the Blue Pill if you have low blood pressure or a recent stroke or heart attack.   Finally, refrain from taking this drug if you have a genetic predisposition to retinal disorders. Viagra’s adverse side effects can be multiplied in patients taking protease inhibitors. Using Viagra with alpha blockers can lead to excessively low blood pressure.

Side Effects

Viagra can have an effect on PDE6 that is used by the cone cells in the eye. This can have an adverse effect on color vision. People taking Viagra can see a haze of blue around everything for a few hours after taking the pill. Viagra can also cause headaches, flushing, stuffy nose and upset stomach. Vision may be blurry and in rare cases Viagra can cause sudden blindness. Heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeat and deafness can also occur.

Today, Sildenafil citrate or Viagra has competition from other drugs such as Cialis and Levitra. As a result its market share has dropped from over 75% to 50%. Nevertheless, it is a popular drug for treating erectile dysfunction and has been recommended by several celebrities including Bob Dole and Hugh Heffner. The Blue Pill, Viagra, still continues to be the market leader.
